Monty Python’s Life of Brian – When all but one of the crowd say they are individuals.
Brian: Please, please, please listen! I’ve got one or two things to say.
The Crowd: Tell us! Tell us both of them!
Brian: Look, you’ve got it all wrong! You don’t NEED to follow ME, You don’t NEED to follow ANYBODY! You’ve got to think for yourselves! You’re ALL individuals!
The Crowd: Yes! We’re all individuals!
Brian: You’re all different!
The Crowd: Yes, we ARE all different!
Man in crowd: I’m not…
The Crowd: Shush!
This one crops up a lot. Every time I see a trend or witness myself doing things that I’ve not really thought about. Things that I do just because they’re they things that people do.
Equally, when I find myself doing my own thing while feeling sad that others don’t agree. A tricky tightrope. Being an individual in a tribal culture. Wanting to belong, and to be yourself.
