‘Portfolio’

I spent some time yesterday discussing taxonomies of job roles and professional disciplines. It reminded me of trying to devise website navigation and sitemap architectures, and ended in a similar feeling of general semantic confusion. What is a ‘producer’ or a ‘graphic designer’ or an ‘animator’. What do we agree on when we hear those job titles?

Anyway, in a similar semantic fashion after reading about Marc Andreessen (in relation to this post) I remembered the classic duality of the ‘portfolio’ tab on a website. For a designer or illustrator or any sort of creative, it’s a section full of their work and creations. For an investor though it’s slightly different. Though again, could we argue about the definitions of creation? While Andreessen may not have personally founded any of the companies in his portfolio, is he not creative to have invested so wisely?
