I’m doing the the Endineering course and very much enjoying the chance to engage more regularly with the concepts that it contains (after being an evangelist of the Ends book for years).
At the moment, my mind is returning a lot to the barriers for companies to design better off-boardings, and how expensive it would be for them to change their behaviours (and so, easy for them to excuse to shareholders why they don’t), when I remembered this video about The Hidden Engineering of Landfills…
A bit of a left-field reference, being an engineering video that seemingly glorifies landfills, but amazing to so clearly see the infrastructure and investment that’s firmly in place behind the current wasteful consumer experience.
Such an enormous system to design our way out of. So much inertia, not just literally within the landfills, but within all related systems and behaviours to this way of life. Important I think to see this side of the challenge.
Important also to note how fascinating even things like landfills can be when presented well! I’ve mentioned being a fan of this channel before (and now I realise in a topic that I’ve repeated myself on), and that’s almost entirely due to how good Grady Hillhouse is at creating and delivering information in an engaging way.
