No such thing as an ‘average’ pilot

Reminded of this story from a nudge from a LinkedIn post, that led me to my last post. Oh, how it’s all connected.

No Such Thing As “Average” Pilot 1950’S Study Suggests

He chose to look at each of the 4,000 pilots’ measurements side by side with the average and found a revelation that was shocking for the times. Not a single pilot even came close the measurements of the average.

There’s a lot that this story says about the difficulty of designing for large groups of people, for doing user research to find consistencies, for making one size fits all, and so on.

Reminds me of this Tom Gauld comic, where we see a mob but not the varied intentions, motives, and needs inside it.

Illustrated comic titled The Angry Mob, in which little pear shaped people of various colours appear to be protesting with hands in the air. Each colour indicates a different personality time and reason to be in the mob. The types are:

BOILING WITH RAGE. VERY ANGRY. ANGRY BUT NOT SURE WHY. A TINY BIT ANGRY. NOT SURE. PRETENDING TO BE ANGRY. JUST LIKES BEING IN A MOB
