An amazing write up about a wonderfully creative playfully and silly website that allowed visitors to collectively check and uncheck 1,000,000 checkboxes.
Amazing also, to me, is that the entire write up contains no exploration or pontification about the UI / UX / ‘user need’ of the whole thing, which is what initially interested me most about it.
The same goes for eieio’s other work. Like turning your Google calendar into a block breaking game, playing two player packman with your face, or turning the file browsing UI of macOS Finder into a payable game. All of it to me is about UX/UI experimentation, when for them it seems only about playing with code to see what’s possible.
A fascinating difference in the minds of developers and user centred designers. Similar end points emerging from totally different motives.
In fact, if you’re like me in the UCD camp and not a dev type person, then I recommend even more than you try to read through the story behind how the page was made. It’s a perfect example of how complex it can be to build even a ‘simple’ sounding idea like this.
