Designing for user error

Some interesting serendipity in my RSS feed* just now.

A post about designing digital nudges and the exacerbation that designers feel when users don’t use interfaces in ‘the way they’re supposed to’.

Followed immediately by counting the cost of my ‘major keying error’, about punishing users when they don’t use interfaces in the way they’re supposed to.

With the latter containing stories of car parking fines (a personal pet peeve), alongside one the scariest examples of the dangers of poor UI design that I’ve ever heard.

*What’s an RSS feed? I’m conscious that some people reading this might not know, which is a very sad fact. Basically, ‘RSS’ is a way for blogs to make their content available for subscription. An RSS feed is stream of content that I subscribe to, and which I read all in one place, without having to go to multiple sites or see lots of content that I’ve not actively asked to see. Read more about RSS if you’re interested.
